Down is warmer by weight, but fleece wins for daily life. Fleece does not lose insulation when wet, can be shoved into a bag without compression damage, is machine washable on any cycle, and does not require the careful treatment that makes down jackets feel like something you have to protect rather than just wear. A good fleece is a garment you can ignore — throw on, zip up, done. The Better Sweater is the right version of that for most people.
