Transparency
Our method
We can't buy and test everything ourselves. But we have a rigorous process for deciding whether a product deserves the True Keeper title and we're transparent about how we do it.
Three levels of verification
🌐
Community Vetted
We analyse hundreds of real-user experiences on Reddit (r/BuyItForLife), consumer forums and review platforms. See below how we filter out fake reviews.
🛠️
Expert Check
We consult craftsmen, specialists and repair technicians. They know what survives ten years of heavy use and what doesn't.
✨
Hands-on Test
The product was purchased and used daily by the True Keepers team. This is the highest verification we can give.
How we filter community data for authenticity
Reddit and consumer forums are goldmines but also full of noise. We use a fixed checklist to determine whether a source is trustworthy:
- Account age and karma: One-time accounts promoting a single product don't count.
- Time perspective: We specifically look for posts from people who have used a product for 5, 10 or 20 years not first impressions.
- Consistency across threads: The same conclusion in multiple independent discussions carries more weight than one detailed story.
- Negative signals: We pay attention to complaints too. A product with only glowing reviews is suspicious.
- No sponsored content: We actively filter out posts affiliated with manufacturers or retailers.
Which materials do we consider Keeper-worthy?
Not every expensive product is a True Keeper. We look at raw materials and construction:
✓ Keeper-worthy
- Cast iron and carbon steel (pan, knife)
- Full-grain leather (shoes, belts, bags)
- Stainless steel 18/10 or higher
- Ceramic and tempered glass
- Solid wood (not particleboard or MDF)
- Brass, copper, bronze
- Gore-Tex and Cordura (textiles)
✗ Not Keeper-worthy
- Teflon and PTFE coating (wears off)
- Thin non-stick layers on aluminium
- Cheap faux leather (PU/PVC)
- Integrated non-replaceable batteries
- Proprietary parts with no supply chain
- Glued instead of riveted/bolted
- Plastic hinges in load-bearing positions
Beyond materials, we also assess repairability: are replacement parts available? Does the brand offer a repair service? Can the product be disassembled without special tools?
Our promise: full transparency
Every article on True Keepers clearly indicates how the product was verified. You will always see one or more of the three badges so you know exactly whether we tested it ourselves, or whether we relied on community consensus and expert opinion.
We earn a small commission if you buy through our links. That doesn't influence our selection: products that don't meet our criteria simply don't get recommended, regardless of the commission.
