The All Mighty Guarantee
Osprey's warranty is unusual: they will repair or replace any Osprey product, for any reason, for any duration of ownership, regardless of where or when you bought it. Damage from misuse, airline baggage handling, years of heavy use — all covered. You do not need a receipt. You do not need to have bought it new. This has been documented by owners sending in 10-year-old packs with broken zips and receiving repaired or replacement bags. The guarantee exists because Osprey builds packs that rarely fail, making the policy financially sustainable.
Why 40L is the right size for travel
40 litres is the largest size that fits in most airline overhead bins without being checked. It is also large enough to hold a week's worth of clothes if you pack efficiently, or two weeks with careful selection. Larger packs — 50L, 65L — force you to check bags, which adds time, cost, and the risk of lost luggage. The discipline of packing for 40L also tends to produce better trips: you carry less, you move more easily, and you stop buying souvenirs you do not need because there is nowhere to put them.
Farpoint vs Fairview, and panel loading
The Farpoint is the men's version; the Fairview is the women's version, with a shorter torso length and a slightly adjusted harness geometry. The functional difference in the pack itself is minimal — choose based on your torso length. Both use panel loading, which means the main compartment opens like a suitcase rather than a top-loading bag. For travel, this is significantly more convenient: you can find items without unpacking the whole bag, and you can lay it flat for airport security.
The harness system
The Farpoint has a suspension system that clips away behind a zippered panel when not in use, converting the pack to a more bag-like form for airline overhead bins and city travel. The harness itself is padded and fits torso lengths up to around 50cm. For a heavily loaded 40L pack (10-15kg), the difference between a fitted suspension and a sack-with-straps is significant over a day of walking. The hip belt transfers weight to your hips rather than hanging from your shoulders.
