The economics are simple

A five-blade cartridge system costs around €3-5 per cartridge replacement. A double-edge razor blade costs €0.15-0.50 each, depending on brand. A safety razor itself costs €30-60 and lasts indefinitely — the only moving part is the head, which has no mechanism to wear out. Most people who switch to a safety razor spend under €20 per year on blades, compared to €80-120 on cartridge replacements. The break-even point is typically 3-4 months.

The learning curve is real but short

Safety razor technique is different from cartridge shaving. You hold the razor at around a 30-degree angle to the skin rather than near-perpendicular. You let the weight of the razor do the work — no pressing. You shave with the grain of the hair for the first pass, across the grain for the second pass if you want a closer shave. The first week involves cuts as you learn the angle. The second week is much better. By week three, most people are getting a closer shave than they got with cartridges. The learning curve is annoying but finite.

The Merkur 34C as the starting point

The Merkur 34C is the standard beginner recommendation for two reasons: it is heavy (79g) and mildly aggressive. The weight means you do not need to press — gravity and the razor's own weight provide enough pressure. The mild aggressiveness means the gap between the safety bar and blade is smaller, which is more forgiving of technique errors. It produces less irritation during the learning phase than more aggressive razors. After six months of daily shaving, many people move to a more aggressive razor for an even closer shave — but the 34C is the right first razor.

Blade selection matters

Not all DE blades are the same. Astra Superior Platinum (made by Gillette, sold under the Astra brand) is the most commonly recommended beginner blade — sharp but not extreme, smooth on most skin types. Feather (Japanese) blades are the sharpest commonly available and unforgiving of poor technique. Gillette Silver Blue is in between. Most people buy a sampler pack of 5-10 brands and find what works best for their skin and beard. 100 blades of a brand you like costs around €10.
