A good pair of hiking boots costs €150 to €350 and lasts 10 to 20 years if resoled. A cheap pair costs €60 and lasts 2 years. The math is straightforward. The harder question is which construction and brand to trust.
What Makes a Hiking Boot BIFL
The key word is Goodyear welt or Norwegian welt construction. This means the upper and the sole are stitched together rather than glued, which makes resoling possible. A cobbler can replace the sole for €50 to €80 when it wears out, extending the life of the boot indefinitely. Boots that are glued together (the majority of hiking boots sold today) cannot be resoled and go to landfill when the sole wears through.
Scarpa
Scarpa makes its boots in Asolo, Italy, and offers resoling through its service network. The Scarpa Zodiac Plus GTX (€280) and Terra GTX (€200) are the most recommended for alpine and trail hiking respectively. The leather uppers break in over 50 to 100 km and then conform to the foot. The fit is narrower than most, which suits European foot shapes well.
Lowa
Lowa makes its boots in Germany and Slovakia. The Renegade GTX Mid (€200) has been the most consistently recommended all-round hiking boot for over a decade. It combines a Goodyear welt construction with Gore-Tex waterproofing and a Vibram sole. The fit is slightly wider than Scarpa, which suits those who find Italian lasts uncomfortable. Lowa offers a resoling service directly.
Hanwag
Hanwag is less well known but worth knowing. Made in Germany and Romania, the Alta Bunion and Tatra II are designed for serious mountain use with a full leather construction and resolable sole. Hanwag explicitly supports resoling through its network of cobblers and offers a repair service directly. For those who want maximum longevity and are willing to invest in maintenance, Hanwag is the best choice.
The Recommendation
For most hikers: the Lowa Renegade GTX Mid. It fits the widest range of feet, handles trail to alpine terrain, and is resolable. If you hike in steep alpine terrain and prefer a stiffer boot: the Scarpa Zodiac Plus GTX. If you want the most serious construction and maximum repairability: Hanwag Tatra II. Whatever you buy: find a cobbler who resolves hiking boots before you need one.
