A headlamp is a safety tool. If it fails on a trail, in a cave, or during a power outage, the consequences are serious. A cheap headlamp has a fragile switch, poorly sealed electronics, and a beam that degrades within a year. Petzl and Black Diamond have made reliable headlamps for professional and outdoor use for decades. They are the two brands worth knowing.

Petzl

Petzl makes its core headlamps in Crolles, France. The Actik Core (€55) is the most versatile model for outdoor use: 450 lumen, rechargeable via USB with the Core battery or runs on standard AAA batteries as a backup. The Tikka (€30) is the entry model: 300 lumen, simple operation, IPX4 water resistance, standard AAA batteries. For professionals (electricians, cavers, climbers) the Petzl Duo S (€200) offers 1100 lumen and ATEX certification. Petzl offers a full spare parts programme and repair service.

Black Diamond

Black Diamond makes its headlamps in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Spot 400-R (€50) is the direct competitor to the Petzl Actik Core: 400 lumen, rechargeable and runs on AAA as backup, red night-vision mode, IPX8 waterproof (submersible to 1 metre). The Spot has a slightly better waterproofing rating than the Actik but a lower maximum brightness. The Storm 500-R (€70) adds a 500 lumen ceiling and a lockout mode for packing. Black Diamond offers a 3-year warranty and replacement parts.

The Recommendation

For hiking, camping, and outdoor use: Petzl Actik Core or Black Diamond Spot 400-R. They are functionally equivalent. The Petzl has the better brand heritage in professional caving and climbing; the Black Diamond has the better waterproofing. For a simple backup headlamp: Petzl Tikka. For professional and industrial use: Petzl Duo S. Always carry spare AAA batteries regardless of which model you choose.
